SPECIAL CLASSES FOR ROMA CHILDREN IN ITALY: THE STORY OF THE ‘LACIO DROM’ PROJECT

In the 1960s, Italy launched special “Lacio Drom” classes to improve schooling for Roma children. These classes, promoted by Opera Nomadi in collaboration with universities and the state, focused on language, mathematics, and practical skills. They were also tied to the Catholic Church’s goal of evangelization and integration into Italian society. The project, active until the early 1980s, had mixed results but remains a milestone in Roma education in Italy.

THE INTERNATIONAL COVENANT ON CIVIL AND POLITICAL RIGHTS: HISTORY AND LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

After World War II, the UN developed new systems to protect Human Rights, beginning with the Universal Declaration and later the ICCPR.
Adopted in 1966, the ICCPR set binding standards for civil and political rights, including specific protections for minorities.
Croatia, which joined the Covenant in 1992, has introduced several positive measures and national plans.
At the same time, challenges remain, especially for Roma, who still face discrimination, segregation, and underrepresentation.

LA ESMERALDA, PAQUITA, DON QUIXOTE: DISCOVERING ROMA PRESENCE IN CLASSICAL BALLET

The history of classical ballet includes many well-known choreographies in which Roma characters are present in the plot along with other characters. Their representation is often very romanticized, following the trends of Romanticism that characterized the 1800s. La Esmeralda, Paquita, and Don Quixote are three very famous examples of this phenomenon, in which stereotypes often get mixed with reality.
